The Lead
Health Department declares the UES Legionnaires' cluster exposure over
The city says the incubation period has passed with no one in the area reporting new symptoms since roughly July 17 — two weeks before the announcement — ending elevated exposure risk in ZIP codes 10028, 10075 and 10128. The cluster's toll: 92 cases, 79 hospitalizations and seven deaths. Cooling towers that screened positive were ordered drained and disinfected; the city never identified a single source tower.

Whole Foods signs a small-format lease at Second Ave & 79th
An 8,121-square-foot ground-floor lease at 1524 Second Avenue puts the grocer on Yorkville's southern edge — likely the chain's quick-trip Daily Shop concept, per Commercial Observer. The company confirms the store but hasn't given an opening date.

Goop Kitchen's first walk-in storefront lands at 346 E 92nd
Gwyneth Paltrow's food brand picked the corner of First Avenue and 92nd for its third NYC location — and unlike the Midtown West and Williamsburg ghost kitchens, Time Out reports this one is its first-ever storefront you can walk into.

Prix-fixe lunch and dinner menus at $30, $45 and $60 across the Upper East Side. Saturdays are excluded, and Sunday participation is up to each restaurant.

The long game: Second Ave subway Phase 2 is officially under major construction
The Q will eventually run north from our 96th Street terminus to 125th, with new stations at 106th, 116th and 125th. The $7 billion extension is slated to open in 2032 — Yorkville's stop goes from end-of-line to through-station.

Openings & Closings
Yorkville Bagel & Cafe has closed after nearly a decade on Second Ave
The shop between 94th and 95th opened in 2017 and closed abruptly and permanently in August 2025, with regulars floating theories — rent, competition — in East Side Feed's coverage at the time.

The Sant Ambroeus team wants to open 'Doria' at Second Ave & 89th
A Northern Italian restaurant pitched to Community Board 8 for 1716 Second Avenue — the room San Matteo Pizza & Espresso Bar moved into from its original space a block north at 1739 Second. It comes from partners who came out of Sant Ambroeus and Felice, per Patch.

Yorkville, Remembered
The Yankees were run from a Yorkville brewery
Ruppert Yorkville Towers on Third Avenue between 90th and 94th stands on the site of the Jacob Ruppert Brewing Company, whose owner Jacob Ruppert Jr. bought the New York Yankees in 1915 — and paid for Babe Ruth and Yankee Stadium with Yorkville beer money. The brewery closed in 1965, was demolished in 1969, and the towers opened in 1975.

One more thing: Lou Gehrig's German immigrant parents raised him in this corner of Manhattan, and a 1990 Yankees plaque at 309 E 94th St calls it his birthplace — but his birth certificate puts the birth at 1994 Second Avenue, up near 103rd. The plaque and the paperwork have agreed to disagree ever since. See you tomorrow morning.
