The Yorkville Ledger

The daily read for Yorkville, NYC

Sunday, September 27, 2026 · No. 45

A quiet Sunday, and the wire barely stirred this morning, so today's paper is the useful kind: a deadline lands this Thursday for a certain kind of kindergarten applicant, and the week ahead holds five full school days and two free reasons to be in Carl Schurz Park.

Applying for 2027 kindergarten? Brearley's early-notification clock stops Thursday

The private-K calendar for fall 2027 entry is officially open, and the first date that matters comes this week: sibling and legacy families who want early notification from Brearley must submit the application by Thursday, October 1, with the full file completed by November 20, per the school's own admission FAQ. Over on East 92nd, Nightingale-Bamford's site lists December 1 as its kindergarten application deadline. As ever with admissions dates, the school's own page is the final word — check it before you plan around it.

Five full school days ahead — the next day off is October 12

For planning purposes: the DOE's 2026-27 calendar shows no citywide closures between Yom Kippur, which came and went last Monday, and Italian Heritage/Indigenous Peoples' Day on Monday, October 12 — so this week runs a plain five-day schedule, per the DOE calendar as reported by Chalkbeat and NBC New York. Enjoy the routine while it lasts; October's holiday is two weeks out.

This Week

Free sports in Carl Schurz Park on Tuesday, stargazing on the esplanade Friday

Two free ones in the park this week. Tuesday, September 29: NYC Parks' Kids in Motion pop-up brings organized sports, games and fitness demos to Carl Schurz Park from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., per the Parks listing, corroborated by Upper East Site's calendar. Then Friday, October 2 at 8:30 p.m., the Amateur Astronomers Association sets up telescopes for its free public observing night on the John Finley Walk esplanade near East 86th — one of the club's monthly May-through-October sessions, weather permitting, with a Saturday rain date, per AAA's own venue page and NASA's Night Sky Network listing. Both kid-friendly; the full calendar lives on our events page.

A 75-mat hot-yoga studio is taking over the old Eastside Billiards space

Just west of our patch line, the former Eastside Billiards & Bar at 163-165 East 86th Street, between Lexington and Third, is set to become an ID Hot Yoga, with room for 75 mats plus mat Pilates, sculpt classes and a cold plunge, per Patch and East Side Feed. The studio is pointed at a fall opening; no firm date yet. The pool hall goes the way a lot of big pool-hall square footage goes now — hot, humid and set to a playlist.

Yorkville, Remembered

Yorkville's grandest church complex was a Rhinelander family memorial

For a churchgoing Sunday: the Church of the Holy Trinity, its parsonage and St. Christopher House at 316-332 East 88th Street, between First and Second Avenues, went up in 1896-99 in an ornate French Gothic Revival style — golden Roman brick, terra cotta, turrets and spires — designed by architects Barney & Chapman. Serena Rhinelander, an heir to the family whose 72-acre Yorkville farm once stretched from Third Avenue to the East River, donated the site and paid for the entire complex as a memorial to her father, William C. Rhinelander, and her grandfather William Rhinelander, who had bought the farmland in 1798. The complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places on May 30, 1980.
